On Friday, January 10, Ed O'Donnell, a USA Hockey and NIHOA official from Mullica Hill, NJ, suffered a heart attack and died at an arena in Pennsauken, NJ. At the time, he was officiating an NJSIAA game between Brick Township and Bishop Eustace High Schools.
Tony Mariconda, Atlantic District Referee-in-Chief, said:
The Atlantic District Officiating Program suffered another loss this weekend. Ed O'Donnell, 45, passed away during a High School game in Pennsauken, NJ Friday night. He was not feeling well during the second period and left the ice. A home team parent who was a doctor went into the locker room to assist him. Unfortunately, Ed apparently suffered a heart attack and could not be revived....
Ed had been a Local Supervisor of Officials and a former member of Seminar Instructors Staff in the Atlantic District. He is survived by his wife Janice and three school-age children.
